As I read chapter 1 of the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed and discussed in class about the oppression and oppressor, I better understood the importance of awareness and the hypocrisy of false charity. Oppression happens all the time at almost everywhere. When a group of people noticed that they are oppressed, then it is possible that they can overthrow the bullying. However, the terrifying part is that people often can not realize that they are oppressed. For example, some fast fashion companies hire child laborers in undeveloped areas like Africa. They argue that they are providing jobs instead of taking advantage of the poor kids.
Another example would be some internet companies today in China advocate a 996 working hour system and boost it as “hard-working. However, the 996 working hour system harms employee’s health and welfare. Both child labor and 996 working hour system are forms of false charity. The logic appears to be: having people work longer helps people earn more and have a better life. As we can see, oppression exists everywhere in life, disguising and hiding behind the propaganda. Having the acuity of awareness helps us to avoid being oppressed under a sense of false charity.
